Family portrait shoot in Margate

Family portrait shoot in Margate with A and family. This was a family photography shoot in Margate, Kent in their home. The idea behind the shoot was to capture a ‘mundane’ Saturday morning, knowing that there is so much beauty in the mundane that we never capture or often acknowledge.
As a young family, they were keen to capture the children before they grew any further. To capture a moment in time before the year moved on to their wedding and travels back home. It was a glimpse of what was before what is.
Family documentary photography is something we often gloss over, we don’t prioritise. But these photos are timeless, these moments are fleeting and it’s a gift to acknowledge the mundane Saturday mornings. Because one day, they simply won’t be.
My Style
I chose to ensure the photo remained darker as per the early morning of the weekend vibe. A wanted me to be part of the morning with a cup of tea. This enabled the children to interact with me as if I were simply a family friend popping round.
I chose to use the edges of the rooms and be out of the room where possible to capture what was happening inside the room. This included being outside the windows and by the door frames. By doing this, I could capture the interactions with more ease and create shadows in the images.
Feedback
I didn’t have a crystal clear brief for Naomi. Except that, I knew time was moving way too fast, and I wanted to capture some of the beautiful moments we have as a family. I wanted to immortalise the quiet beauty that we have every morning as a family. Naomi understood this innately and came into our home without making us feel that we needed to be on show for her. She captured us at our most basic and made it beautiful. Which is an incredible skill.
Life with a toddler and a baby is crazy, but it’s full of gorgeous moments I knew in 10,15 and 50 years hence I would miss.
I feel like the photos she delivered us are how we will remember this time. Soft light, gentle laughter, playfulness and togetherness, all of this come across in how she captured us.
Cannot recommend inviting Naomi to photograph your family enough.
